JIGGERS TO HELP KIDS

Our Community Health Volunteers have been helping people afflicted with jiggers sand fleas
through our Health Literacy program for four years now. Their main aim has been to treat
people infected with jiggers, and also to teach families about how to prevent infections in future. Jiggers are a tricky problem to tackle because part of the flea’s life cycle is spent in the soil as well as on animals, thus a multi-pronged approach is necessary.
This year, we invested further in our jiggers program, introducing the element of shoes for
children. By providing the neediest kids with low-cost, closed shoes, kids feet are kept even
safer, and we reduce their risk of them being reinfected after treatment. The initiative has been
welcomed by the community, and has strengthened our efforts in making a tangible and
sustainable impact at the grass roots.
